The Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice and The Karass Sanctuary

In our society, most animals are denied a peaceful life and death. The Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice and The Karass Sanctuary for Farmed Animals  hopes to show that there is always another way of seeing and doing things, in life and in death.

I started the hospice in memory of my best friend Maggie who died alone in hospital without me, even though I promised I'd see her again and that she would come home. I couldn't keep my promise to her, and on the day I went to say goodbye to her instead of bring her home I said the words 'The Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice'. I still don't know why or where the idea came from, but in her memory I promised that I'd try to be there for souls who hadn't known a lot of love or friendship in their lives, and make sure that they didn't die alone.

At the hospice and sanctuary we give responsible, compassionate life-long and end-of-life care to terminally-ill companion animals who have been abandoned in the final stages of their lives, and to farmed animals who would otherwise live and die in the food system.  We believe in quality care that is comforting, kind, respectful, compassionate and dignified, and that freedom, love, and joy are essential to a life worth living, no matter how long we are here.

Whatever shape carries us through this world, in life and in death we all want the same things; to feel safe, secure and comfortable, and to be free from worry, anxiety, pain and fear. At the hospice and sanctuary we try to take care of as many of the day to day worries as we can so that the folk who call this little corner of the world home can spend their lives in peace that is often hard to come by. When the time comes to leave, we hope for a dignified and peaceful death at home, with a friend by their side.

As a society, I think there is a tendency to not face death in a very healthy and comforting way. I try to help people as they face the inevitable with their own friends.

The Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice and The Karass Sanctuary is run by Alexis with help from family and friends, and it relies entirely on donations from people who share the belief in the importance of a good life and a good death. You can support the  work of the hospice and sanctuary by donating and following our adventures.  I am  grateful for every donation to help me continue give my friends lives worth living, and a peaceful, dignified exit stage left when the time comes.
